My Experience

When I graduated with my MA in Linguistics from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, I really wanted to teach at the University.

But at that time, our country was in a severe recession and even some of my Professors were being laid off. So it was unlikely that I would be hired.

I went straight into business instead. And as I grew in my career I began to understand that my training in Linguistics was going to serve me well. I learned that when we are communicating with others we are all either trying to persuade others to our point of view or being persuaded by others to their point of view: we were all either buying or selling.

Though I am semi-retired now, I am still engaged in business and academic affairs. I am currently the Director of International Affairs at the University of Qingdao, China. Our company helps Chinese students study overseas in a number of North American universities.

In my career I have met all kinds of people: those who were skilled and those who were not; those who were prosperous and those who were broke; those who worked with their hands and those who used their ingenuity; those who spoke English precisely and those who were new immigrants and could only speak a few essential words.

And I could communicate well with them all. I understood that to the degree that we can communicate well, will determine the degree of our prosperity.

I applied that law to what I consider to be a successful life.
